Hypovitaminosis

(Red-Eared Sliders)
This table lists the symptoms of what hypovitaminosis (lack of a specific vitamin) can cause in turtles.
 
 Vitamin A
Symptoms:  Acute eye malformations, exhorbited eyes, blured vision that can  deteriorate to total blindness, white spots  in the  carapace, loosing pieces of skin in neck and legs as well as scutes.

How to prevent it:  Vitamin supplements twice a week as well as foods rich in vitamin A (water hyacinths, tomatoes, tetra gammarus shrimp).

Treatment:  Administer an inyection from 60 to 120,000 IU of vitamin A par Kg and a second inyection two or three weeks later.

 Vitamin D3
Symptoms:  Slowing growth rate, deformations of th carapace, rachytism.

How to prevent it:  Vitamin supplements twice a week, exposition to direct sun or a full spectrum light from 8 to 12 hours per day.

Treatment:  Injection of a multivitamin supplement.

 Vitamin E
Symptoms:  Nodules, lipomes, abcesses of fatty tissues.

Treatment:  Injections of multivitamin supplements.  Removal of the abcesses.

 Vitamins of the B group
Symptoms:  Problems of the central nervous system, lethargy.

How to prevent it:  Vitamin supplements twice a week.

Treatment:  Injections of multivitamin supplements, oral supply of  cod liver oil, fish organs.

 Iron (lack of)
Symptoms:  Deformations and slow growth rate.

Treatment:  Foods rich in iron (beef liver, just while the problem exist).

  Phosphorus and
 Calcium (lack of)
Symptoms:  If those two items are not provided in an equel balance, the turtle might suffer from similar symptoms to those caused by the lack of  vitamin D3 (It is important to note that vitamin D3 is responsible for the fixation of Calcium and Phosphorus in the bones).

How to prevent it:  Provide a cuttlebone to your turtle or  add a vitamin supplement rich in calcium to her food twice a week.

Treatment:  Injection of a multivitamin supplement.
